Local Trails

The Brig Trail Camp Lejeune, NC. This course was designed and built by the Club to challenge the Beginner and the Expert alike. With no "mountains" here in the East we took advantage of the natural terrain of short drops, thick woods and log piles to creat an exceptional racing and training course.

New River Air Station Trail, As it stands for now, Down East Cyclists will no longer sponsor any trail riding or maintenance at the New River trail location. We are working with base range control to see what if anything we can do to utilize the training area in which these trails are located; HOWEVER, as far as Range Control is concerned these are UNAUTHORIZED trails located in a training area not designated for recreational use. Persons riding the New River trails can be subject military discipline and/or federal fines. Using the DEC name as your excuse for being there can cause us to lose our status as a sanctioned club on base thus jeopardizing our use of other trails like the Brig. Your DEC club officers will continue to try and find a workable solution to the loss of this very popular riding area and will report back to our membership if this status changes. Until then, PLEASE refrain from riding in the New River area. Thank you. Jeff LeBlanc, Pres, DEC.

Haywood Landing, Stella, NC (Hyw 58). Part of the Croatan National Forest, this set of trails is about as rugged and remote as we get. With 5 miles of single track on the West (Landing) side of the Hwy 58 and 15+ miles on the East side, you can spend the day getting in a lot of riding. Miles of scenic wilderness, tight singletrack and log piles make this course a great get-a-way. During the rainy months it can get a bit wet so bring your waterproof socks.

The Piranha Pit, MCAS Cherry Point, Havelock, NC. My personal favorite, this rugged and rooty trail will challange the best of us. With multiple drops and climbs on short rooty hills and fast packed singlrtrack, "The Pit" makes up for the fact the we're missing mountains here in Eastern Carolina. A great place for the family, this course is located at the Shady Grove picnic area, with camp sites, bathrooms, a playground, ball field and covered pavilion picnic tables. Additionally, with a short, flat, one mile section of the MTB course we call "The Inner Loop" any age and skill level will enjoy riding here. The Club receintly added two new bridges crossing the small creek at the far end of the course. Cross over and check out an additional 1/2 mile of single track.

The Bicycle Post Trail, Greenville, NC. The home course of the ECU team, this trail is well worth the 2 hour drive it takes to get there from Jacksonville. This 8 mile + course was designed to challenge all who ride there taking full advantage of the terrains natural drops, climbs and obsticles. This course has become the home of ECU's "Monkey Chucker 2.4", a 24 hour MTB race that is a BLAST for the Beginner Four Person Team as well as the Veteran Soloist.

From The EC Velo Club: The current trail is approximately 8.5 miles long with a total of 500 vertical feet of climbing (an amazing feat considering that the trail is in the Costal Plain). Many riders think the new trail is better than the old one, and it certainly is as good and is continuing to improve as it gets ridden and additional improvements are made. A map of the trail will be available in the next few months, please visit www.ecvelo.org for up to date information. The trails are accessed from Short Bridge Road which is off of NC 43 approximately 2 miles south of Falkland. Drive approximately 1/2 mile down Short Bridge Road and look for a sign marking the start of the trail at a thin line of trees on the left side of the road. Parking is available in the back of the field that you pass before reaching the trail entrance.
The trail is on private land and as such is paid for with a formal lease with the owner as well as liability insurance. Please support the use of this trail by using the "Honor Box" at the trail head and paying a small fee to help offset the lease costs. Thank You!!!.

Information, Descriptions, and Directions on all these trails plus many more in the state can be found on the "Trail Finder" menu of the Club MTB web site. Check It Out!
